After several days without seeing Mommy, the busy boys came for a little visit to the hospital. “I really miss them,” she had said, almost with tears, so I had to bring them.

It was 28 degrees and dark. TJ had stopped throwing up so only had a runny nose. SJ had TJ’s runny nose the day before but seemed content enough, and my homeschool group had relocated from our house so my night was free. Why not? Let’s give it a go.

Since the water main break at the hospital a few days ago, parking is a bit different. It’s a long walk from the car to the room now. They were cold and complaining all the way, but we made it. As soon as they saw her they were bouncing off the walls. It’s as if all the emotion and energy of 4 days were concentrated in that first 5 minutes.

SJ, the climber, immediately attempted the bed, first from the side (too high, no handles), then from the end (even higher, but with handles). Nothing doing. That’s worth crying about. But I couldn’t help him because TJ actually made it on the bed, which created certain problems for J and me. He’s 40 pounds, but really too young to be responsible with so much body mass. On a high risk unit, he’s more like a Mack truck with loose breaks. You never know what he’s going to run into next. And then Benjabunny, in an uncharacteristic episode, started tearing around the room touching everything. “Put that down, no you can’t play with that, not on the floor…. oh.”

I think Benjabunny told the others that this was where you go to eat snacks, because they really went at it. We had just finished dinner, but they were ready. They tore into the Chex Mix, had J’s drink finished off in no time, and started asking for more. Half of TJ’s cookie fell on the floor and J said to throw it away because it was dirty, so he threw away the part that was still in his hand (5 second rule applies to trash cans?). There was a fight over the drink, so while I was resolving that I didn’t realize that SJ found the water and spilled it on himself and the floor.

Benjabunny likes Orangina like his mother, he had a bottle that was his very own, but then he shared it with TJ so he couldn’t get it back because TJ has been sick, so that’s worth crying about. I left to get another drink (peacemaker that I am), but failed to bring one for EVERYONE (what kind of husband and father am I?), so back to the convenience room for more.

Meanwhile TJ is down, Benjabunny is up, SJ wants to be up but has to be down, but as soon as he is up, wants to be back down, and why can’t I have what he has and when is Mommy coming home and I want more cookies and is that a poopy diaper I am smelling and why is TJ walking like that whose socks are on the floor and will someone get the Aquaphor that dropped under my bed and don’t use that towel to wipe up the floor because I was going to use it for a shower (too late) and maybenextimeyoudontbringalltheboysatthesametime…..

Ahem.

So, how was your day? No time for that. See you tomorrow.
