Today was all about preparing the soil. Because Jack’s design was right, we could all pitch in at the same time (12 kids, 6 adults, and one baby), which meant we got a lot done in just a few hours.

Then Cindy, our lead gardener, turned us all on to vegetables. “Some things we can plant today,” she said, “like spinach and lettuce. The other things we’ll plant next week or next month.” Everyone was excited to suggest a favorite for the lineup. In the end, there were so many selected it’ll be a challenge to cram them all in. Already Cindy is scouting around the yard looking for more unclaimed dirt in a sunny spot.

Alex worked the hardest, taking on the tilling and removing the ivy. He’s turning into quite the young man and set a good example of perseverance for us all. Next week, more planting and (we hope) the installation of the third bed. My muscles are tired just thinking about it.
